Beach Safety Tips for Seniors

July 02, 2015 1 min read

Summer is here, making this the perfect time for ice cream, cook outs, and-- if you’re lucky enough to live near a coast-- beach trips! Here are a few tips so you can stay safe and have fun in the sun.

    1. Stay Hydrated (and not with salt water)

It’s easy to get dehydrated on a hot summer’s day, so remember to bring plenty of water to keep your body running strong.

    2. Don’t Get Burnt

Sunscreen is an important accessory for any beach day. Also, hats can keep the sun out of your eyes and keep the top of your scalp from burning.

    3. Don’t Overheat

Staying hydrated is a good way to keep from overheating. You can also go to the beach early in the morning, before the day gets too hot.

    4. Make Sure You’re a Strong Swimmer Before Going Into the Ocean

If you don’t swim regularly, you may not be as strong a swimmer as you once were. So before going into the ocean, it’s a good idea to practice in a pool, as they pose far fewer risks.

    5. Make Sure You Have the Right Mobility Aids

Some mobility aids don’t work well on rough terrain. If you use a cane, walker or crutches, consider getting a SandPad Beach Stabilizer Tip, which will help you stay steady on uneven surfaces like sand.
