Whether you’re recovering from an injury or just naturally aging, if you’re buying a mobility aid chances are now more than ever you need to stay active. How? The obvious answers are exerciseand spending time with your family/friends. And those are both important. But here are some other ideas you may not have considered.

 1. Take Classes

Whether you’re 17 or 70, learning new things is enriching and (hopefully) fun. Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn to do? Many community centers offer classes in subjects like cooking, art, writing and more. You get to meet new people and learn a new skill.

 2. Volunteer

Volunteering allows you stay active while making the world a better place. Did you know the Peace Corps actively welcomes seniors? Have you ever heard of the Senior Corps? What about being a foster grandparent? Whatever you want to do, there are people out there who need your help.

 3. Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art that dates back to at least the 1500s. Because it is a meditative, low impact exercise it is suitable for almost anyone. It can be done alone or in a group, indoors or outdoors, and doesn’t require equipment.

 4. Gardening

Gardening is a fun outdoor activity and a known stress reducer. Plus, you get to see (and possibly taste) your hard work pay off.

 5. Get a Pet

Pets make great companions and offer numerous health benefits. According to the CDC pets can decrease your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels while simultaneously increasing your opportunities for exercise and socialization. Also, pets are cute.
