Wheelchair Foundation Distributes Wheelchairs Around the World

Most of us take our mobility for granted. Many of us can walk without the use of a mobility device. And many of those who can’t have easy access to affordable wheelchairs, crutches, rollators, and other mobility devices.

But not everyone is so lucky. That’s why the Wheelchair Foundation has given away over 980,000 wheelchairs in more than 150 countries. They’re a non-profit and the world’s largest wheelchair relief organization. Their ultimate goal is to “provide a free wheelchair to every child, teen and adult worldwide who needs one, but has no means to acquire one.”

The Wheelchair Foundation is supported by generous donors from all around the world, such as 6 year old Jessi Dowling. She heard about the Wheelchair Foundation through her kindergarten class and decided she wanted to do something. So she set up a stand selling lemonade and brownies for $0.50 or a donation.

It takes $150 for the Wheelchair Foundation to give someone a new wheelchair. Through the lemonade stand (and a little money of her own), Dowling was able to get $75. And thanks to a matching grant from her parents that added up to enough to provide a wheelchair for a kid who didn’t have one.

According to Dowling’s mom Jill, “Jessi has always inherently been a sensitive, kindhearted, and giving child who prays every night for all the people in the world that no one will die. No earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, tragedies that would hurt people. She wants everyone to be nice and no one to go to jail.”
